NOT FOR SHARING!
Working with Dog-Dog Resource Guarding
Living or working with dogs who guard items from other dogs in the household can be really tough. Not only can it be challenging to manage, there are very few programmes dedicated to supporting dogs who don't want to share things in the home. Sadly, relationships can quickly turn very sour. Animosity between the dogs involved can build to a point where they are no longer able to live with each other.
That may include:
- Dogs who guard food items, bowls or chews from other dogs in the home
- Dogs who guard toys, stolen items or found items from other dogs they live with
- Dogs who struggle to accept other family companion animals in their space or resting areas like beds or couches
- Dogs who struggle if they don't get to go first into a space
- Dogs who struggle if they have priority access to spaces such as hallways, doorways, gardens, cars or bedrooms
- Dogs who might have been thought of as 'dominant' or 'aggressive'
It even includes dogs who guard the weird stuff from other dogs, like their own vomit!
