FRUSTRATION MATTERS

Frustration is pervasive for dogs in Western countries. First, we breed dogs specifically for their responsiveness, their goal oriented behaviour and their trainability, and then we put in thousands of restrictions.

Worse, where fearful behaviour is recognised and professionals work to reduce fearfulness in their work, frustration has no such recognition.

When we don’t take frustration into account when looking at training and behaviour modification, we not only worsen the odds of success, but we can also unwittingly contribute to frustration-related behaviour.

Frustration can cause significant welfare issues when it goes unnoticed. As many leading veterinary behaviourists say, frustration is often a better explanation as a cause of behaviour than fearfulness or anxiety.

WORKING WITH FRUSTRATION

Many common behaviours in dogs can be fuelled by frustration. Understanding the role that it plays in separation-related behaviour, aggression and repetitive behaviours can make a huge difference to the welfare of our dogs.

Yet it is not always as easy as it seems. Manipulating rewarding variables to manage a dog's behaviour or help teach them important coping skills can make a huge difference. When we are technically proficient, we can manage a dog's frustrations easily. However, it is easy to go wrong and worsen the problem rather than resolving it. In this course, we look at the common fallout of frustration in dogs' lives and we look at ways to help them without contributing to their issues.
